Oh, how community theatre is infestted with lunatics.  Not an abundance of them, but enough of a minority to ruin it for everyone else.

You'd think I do this all the time
I went out three nites in a row last week - a rarity for me. Thursday with my cast, Friday at Ann & Keith's, Saturday to a show in Stickney. The show in Stickney (50 minutes south - good thing I wasn't driving) was quite bad, and most of our group laughed primarily at our friend Floyd in the show (who was funny), while trying not to laugh at the non-comical things that were wrong with the rest of it. It turns out that this opening performance was, in fact, the first time they had ever done the show from beginning to end - which was evident, among other things. Based on that knowledge, I'll not judge it too harshly. But it's in the running for the worst show I've ever seen in community theatre.

My 'Monday' officially started at 6:00 PM on Sunday. I worked out until around midnight, then watched most of a movie I've been meaning to see for a while (Vision Quest), then decided, rather than go to bed, to stay up and finish a project that I've been dallying with for a month now.  I finished it, just in time to go to my dentist appointment @ 10AM.  Upon going to my car - this being the first time I had been outside since waking up 16 hours earlier - I discover I have a flat, and have to reschedule my dentist for later that afternoon.  I then proceed to replace a tire on my car.  Outside.  In 15 degree weather.  And with my car's other three tires firmly balanced on a sheet of ice (upon reflection, not the safest thing I've ever done).  Actually, the most challenging part was breaking the pounds of ice off the trunk to get to the spare to start with.

With that done, I went to Pep Boys.  Fortunately, I got the tire replaced for $0 as I was foresightful enough to get a warranty on the tires when I bought them over a year ago. (I suppose I knew they would be doomed, being put on my vehicle.) 3 hours of waiting later, I'm just in time for the dentist, and get home with enough time to shower, eat, and take a 30 minute nap before rehearsal.  In total, I went for 30 hours with less than one hour of sleep.

And didn't flip out once the entire time.  That's the incredible part.

So, I had a gum graft last Friday. It didn't hurt much when the doctor did it - much less painful than you would expect for having two parts of your gums removed at once and then sewn back together. I've been living more or less comfortably on eggs, pasta, soup, pudding, Hydrocodone (generic Vicodin) and Amoxicillin for the past five days.

Until today, when on the train ride back home the packing on the roof of my mouth came apart. Now I'm in some pain. Everytime I move my tongue it feels like I've got a bad pizza burn.  Plus, I fully feel the mouthful of stitches I have.  Only two more days of this, hopefully.

Was just driving through my hometown. I can't believe how much of the place is shutting down. (There's a rhyme there somewhere.)

All the old haunts from school are going out of business. I still remember the time I had lunch with Chris at the Long John Silver's on Rand. For that matter, I remember the last time I ate there myself, earlier this year - one of the few times I've indulged in fast food, and at least partly because of old times' sake. Now it's closed. Ken's is scaling down as well, which simply makes me sad. I wouldn't be the savant I am today if not for that place.

As though I didn't feel like a ghost already whenever I visit.

    Casting results
I was offered a "professional" theatre gig last week, but easily turned it down. Several factors, but the heaviest was the fact it would have meant me working with a particular actor in the lead role. I'm not starving yet, and they couldn't have paid me enough to tolerate this guy for 2 months. I know of at least 3 others who refused to be cast as well, for various reasons. I know I made the right decision.

Instead, I've been cast in a show that I was much more interested in to begin with. However, all I really know for sure is that the role(s) I've accepted involve a great deal of (unforeseen) cross-dressing. I can't wait.

Aside from the other major changes going in my life at present, I put myself through a great deal of unnecessary stress the last 4 days.  It's over now, and another lesson learned.  It helps to know one's own limitations.

    The stomach of a he-goat
In the past 2 weeks, I have consumed the following without any symptoms of food poisoning:

    - 1/2 gallon of sour milk
    - 1/3 lb of spoiled bacon (cooked, of course)
    - 4-5 half-rotten bananas
    - a couple of bruised peaches
    - moldy broccoli (though I've had that plenty of times to barely matter anymore)
    - various slices of moldy cheese

I also spat out a bite of extra-sweet-tasting old watermelon, immediately tossing the rest into the can.  I didn't want to test my threshold too much.

    Opening weekend

My first time acting in front of an audience in over 8 months went really well, and we all had fun at the same time.

What dumb stupid idiot put that in there?
Thumbing through an old file, I came across the following quote from 4 years ago:

"Policy can be paid-up on 1/19/14 for $13,451"

Trying to figure out what it meant, I quickly see that some moron calculated both extended term and paid-up status simultaneously, when in reality you can only do one of them.  I look to see who signed this ridiculous statement - "MZ".

    Two in a row:

FOUR movies I'd watch over and over:
    1. Aguirre, the Wrath of God
    2. Evil Dead
    3. The Empire Strikes Back
    4. Used Cars

    FOUR places I've lived:
    9:39 am

I might be a bit behind in this, but here goes:

    1. Grab the nearest book.
    2. Open the book to page 123.
    3. Find the fifth sentence.
    4. Post the text of the next 3 sentences on your LJ along with these instructions.
    5. Don’t you dare dig for that "cool" or "intellectual" book in your closet! I know you were thinking about it! Just pick up whatever is closest.

They looked on, between relief at this departure of their remorseless enemies, and despair at the wild ravages which, temporarily at least, had wrecked the prosperity and happiness of that little colony.

The boats pulled away from the shore, with their loads of laughing, jeering Spaniards, who were still flinging taunts across the water at their surviving victims.  They had come midway between the wharf and the ship, when suddenly the air was shaken by the boom of a gun.

I revisited a 'crucial' stage of my adolescence over the weekend.  I hadn't seen the music video for Billy Idol's "Cradle of Love" since high school, and thusly had to blast it over the speakers (more than)/a few times upon discovering it among the DVD extras for The Adventures of Ford Fairlane.

Furthermore, I now have a name to go with the *aherm* face that has been emblazoned in my subconscious for nearly half my life: "Betsy Lynn George".  Ah, but they don't have girls in music videos like this anymore.

I've been in a quandry the last 3 days.  I'm better now, or at least more prepared for the next chance I encounter a figure from my past.

    I don't think I'll ever get over how short-sighted I once was.

    That's it
Next year, I'm getting a damn Venus fly-trap.  It's bad enough I've got to take out a trash bag that's less than half full because the bugs of summer like to hatch in the banana peels and egg shells I throw away.  But then even after you remove the nesting ground, you have a few dozen of those little bastards buzzing around your place for a couple days.  A nice carnivorous plant would not only help take care of that, but look cool, too.

(This is pretty gross to talk about, actually.)

    ARGHness

Our policy administration network is down, now I'm not able to look anything up.  And of course, I've got two requests marked 'urgent' for policyholders wanting to surrender their insurance.  I'm all about clearing out the problem cases, but work with me, dammit.

Ah, at least I found out we are in fact getting rid of one of the 'elite' policies.  Even though he's getting about $200 more than he should (thanks to the system I inherited in dealing with this type of plan that isn't on the regular network i.e. - that one that is currently out of order), it's a small price to pay for not having to handle this guy's repeated requests anymore.

    Frankenstein Island
I watched this movie a few weeks ago, and ever since I have been completely obsessed with it's sheer awfulness.  I even tried writing a review of it, but found that there was just too much to poke fun at this movie about.  The incoherent plot, the acting, the effects, the fight scenes, John Carradine's irrelevant interjecting projected image.  It soon became overwhelming, and I gave up the review after 4 pages and having only covered about the first 20 minutes of the film.

Instead, here is a much braver individual's review that does the film justice.  (It's 100% accurate, too - right down to the plastic devil's trident.)

But otherwise, seeing this movie may have seriously changed my entire perception of what a "Bad Movie" truly is.  I've been to the video store in the weeks since, and in considering renting a particular film that promises crappiness, I immediately think to myself, 'But there's no way it can be as bad as "Frankenstein Island"', and return it to the shelf.  This may turn out to be a breakthrough in my taste of films from here on.  Maybe now I'll find time to watch the good films I've missed along the way.

For once, I'm glad I stayed at work late yesterday.

I just checked PerformInk for the first time in. . . .a long time. It took me 10 minutes to remember what my password was, if that's any indication. I'm deciding to finally jump back into the whole auditioning thing like I once did. There's a couple things listed that I definitely want to check out (films, mostly). So, here goes.
